According to transfer insider Dean Jones, writing for Eurosport, West Ham United ‘still believe’ they can keep Manchester United ‘at arm’s length’ if they come knocking for star midfielder Declan Rice this summer – coming as a potentially huge boost for David Moyes.

Moyes gifted possible Rice boost

Rice, who has been a crucial player for the Hammers this season, is likely to attract attention in the transfer market – but the club are very keen to keep hold of the 22-year-old.

Jones explains that the club want to build around him and Jesse Lingard next season and ‘use them as bait’ to sign more top talent.

It has been suggested that the Red Devils could mount an assault for Rice in the summer, but the Irons are confident they can keep them at bay – especially considering he is a ‘loyal lad’ and has ‘loved his emergence’ as the West Ham poster boy.

Being in the Champions League would make the decision to remain in east London that much easier, but the Irons still believe they can repel interested parties like United at this stage.

Currently out due to injury, the next few encounters in particular will be crucial as Moyes aims to guide West Ham to an unprecedented European finish without Rice’s influence in midfield.

Averaging 1.9 tackles and 2 interceptions per 90 in the Premier League this season, the Englishman also completes 87.9% of his passes – displaying a cool head on young shoulders (WhoScored).

News of West Ham’s stance that they are confident of keeping Rice comes as a boost for Moyes as he aims to build a team around him and Lingard.

Lingard possibly signing on a permanent deal, with reports explaining the Hammers are keen to do so, could also be a crucial factor as the pair apparently get on very well behind the scenes.
